A new bill that would provide identification cards to all former service members was passed by the Senate on Monday evening. The newest version of the bill will now return to the House of Representatives for reapproval.
Under the current policy, only veterans who served a minimum of 20 years or have sustained a disability related to their service qualify for a veteran ID card. The new bill would allow all veterans to prove their military service with a valid ID.
With stolen valor reaching even more ridiculous heights, a veteran ID can go a long way in proving the legitimacy of a serviceman’s military status. As it stands, a veteran who hasn’t served for 20 years or been disabled in combat would have to carry around their discharge papers to prove their status.
The downside of the veterans’ ID proposal is that it only provides a physical ID card. Any veteran who hopes to use their military discounts online should verify their status with ID.me.
