Rep. Graham Hunt, the congressman flayed for exaggerating his military service and claiming to be a combat veteran officially resigned from his position Tuesday.

The announcement was posted in an extended statement on his campaign website.

It is with a heavy heart that I inform you that I hereby resign from my position as Representative for the Second District, effective today, February 2, 2016. Over the past week, substantial media attention has been devoted to inconsistencies in the records of my military service.

In the statement, Hunt explained that despite his best efforts, he couldn’t compile the documents that described his military service the same way he did on his website and on the campaign trail. In the wake of all this media attention, Hunt is bowing out of politics to save both his family and constituents from an extended scandal.

As I have stated before, I have nothing to conceal, nor have I ever deliberately conducted myself in a manner that compromises my integrity or the integrity of this office. However, the recent speculation of impropriety has taken its toll on my family, my colleagues, and the community. The people of the Second District of Washington deserve a full-time representative who can zealously advocate for their objectives without distraction. Under the current circumstances, I no longer feel that I can meet these expectations. Therefore, it is in the best interests of the people of Washington that I relinquish my seat.

According to military records that the press could dig up, Hunt served in the Arizona Air National Guard between 1998 and 2005. He was deployed in Saudi Arabia during the active-duty portion of his service, where he completed security drills.
