The world’s most wanted man is wanted no more.
Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto sent out the following tweet Friday confirming that the notorious drug lord known as “El Chapo” — formerly Joaquin Guzman Loera — has been captured.
Misión cumplida: lo tenemos. Quiero informar a los mexicanos que Joaquín Guzmán Loera ha sido detenido.
— Enrique Peña Nieto (@EPN) January 8, 2016
English translation: “Mission accomplished: we have him. I want to inform the Mexicans that Joaquin Guzman Loera has been detained.”
Nothing more has yet been released. Stay tuned to blog as we’ll update this post with further details, when they come to light.
You might remember that ole Chapo escaped from the Alitplano prison on the outskirts of Mexico City on July 11 through an elaborate and highly-questionable underground rail system. A manhunt has been in place since the jailbreak.
According to the Venezuelan-based news site teleSUR, the capture hasn’t come without its significant and bloody collateral damage — caused by Mexico’s military:
… in the alleged search for EL Chapo, Mexican marines and soldiers have committed serious human rights abuses against innocent people and against communities as a whole, as in early October after firing on homes and civilians, including women and children, various people killed, an undetermined number of others were forcibly disappeared and over 600 displaced.
