French police have confirmed that Abdelhamid Abaaoud, the man suspected of masterminding the Paris attacks on Nov. 13 and train attack in August, was killed in an early morning raid on Wednesday. This raid, the same that killed explosives-detection dog Diesel, resulted in a seven hour shootout between nearly 100 police officers and several jihadists.

In August, two American servicemen and a student thwarted an attempted train hijacking while on vacation in France. That attack was later connected to Abaaoud, who bragged that he would always stay one step ahead of counterterrorism teams.

Unfortunately for the terrorist, Abaaoud’s karma caught up with him. After fleeing police over the weekend, Abaaoud holed himself up in an apartment with his cousin and several allies. French police pinpointed his location using phone-tapping and tipoffs from concerned locals. When they arrived at the apartment, they sent police dog Diesel inside first to assess the threat level within the apartment.

Abaaoud’s cousin Hasna Aitboulahcen emerged with an AK-47 and an explosive suicide vest. When police asked, “Where’s your boyfriend?” she yelled, “He’s not my boyfriend!” before detonating her vest. In addition to killing the dog, she collapsed an entire floor of the apartment building, killing herself.

In the ensuing gunfight, which reportedly lasted seven hours, police killed Abaaoud and arrested eight others.

ABC News describes how Abaaoud’s body was found.

The suspected ringleader of the Paris attacks, Abdelhamid Abaaoud, has been identified as one of those killed in Wednesday’s raid in the suburb of Saint Denis, the Paris prosecutor says.

His body was found riddled with bullets and shrapnel in a shattered apartment in the northern suburb.’

A fitting end.
