Three terror attacks on an airport and metro station in Brussels, Belgium occurred Tuesday morning. The country, which had only just found and arrested one of the ringleaders of the November Paris attacks, has increased its terror threat to maximum level.

What We Know

– Two bombs were detonated at Zaventem Airport at 8 a.m. local time

– Early reports said the explosions occurred by the American Airlines check in desk. The airline confirmed that this claim was false, and no American Airlines employee or crew member was harmed.

– The airport explosions were definitely carried out by a suicide bomber

– An hour later, another explosion rocked the Maelbeck metro station, killing dozens

– Surviving metro passengers were forced to get off their trains and evacuate by walking through smoke-filled tunnels

– As of 9 AM EST, the death roll has risen to 34 casualties. At least 136 are wounded.

While there is still a lot we do not know about this horrific attack, the timing is noteworthy. Last Friday, Belgian law enforcement tracked down and captured Salah Abdeslam in an apartment after months of investigation. During the confrontation that resulted in Abdeslam’s capture, he was shot in the leg. Abdeslam is the last living architect of the devastating Nov. 13 Paris attacks, and was the most wanted man in Europe.

The Islamic State has not yet taken responsibility for the attack, but the media is theorizing that the Brussels attacks were made in retaliation to Abdeslam’s arrest.

Foreign travelers in Belgium are encouraged to stay indoors and avoid public transportation. The airport will also be closed until early Wednesday morning.

UPDATE 1: ISIS has taken responsibility for the Brussels attacks.

The Islamic State’s official news agency released a statement claiming that its militants orchestrated the three explosions in Brussels.

Islamic State fighters carried out a series of bombings with explosive belts and devices on Tuesday, targeting an airport and a central metro station in the center of the Belgian capital Brussels, a country participating in the coalition against the Islamic State. Islamic State fighters opened fire inside the Zaventem airport, before several of them detonated their explosive belts, as a martyrdom bomber detonated his explosive belt in the Maalbeek metro station.

UPDATE 2: Fourth bomb failed to explode.

An additional bomb planted in the airport failed to detonate. Authorities were able to isolate and neutralize the explosive before it hurt anyone.

Though many lives were spared thanks to this mishap, Belgian authorities did note that the bombs were “sophisticated.”
