The two American military members who tackled an AK-47-wielding terrorist to the ground on a Paris-bound train received France’s Legion of Honour award.
U.S. Airman Spencer Stone and National Guardsman Alek Skarlatos had no finery to wear to their award ceremony, but polo shirts and khaki shorts did not dampen the celebration of their heroic stand against terrorism. The medals were presented by President Francois Hollande, who praised the Americans for their quick thinking.
“Since Friday, the entire world admires your courage, your sangfroid, your spirit of solidarity,” Hollande said. “This is what allowed you to with bare hands — your bare hands — subdue an armed man. This must be an example for all, and a source of inspiration.”
The Legion of Honour is the highest decoration in France for both military members and civilians. Its legacy dates back to the reign of Napoleon Bonaparte.
The gunmen, Ayoub El-Khazzani, is currently being questioned in custody. Investigators are searching for connections to ISIS and other terrorist groups.
