More than 50 years ago, then-sitting POTUS Lyndon Baines Johnson signed an executive order decreeing that the location of Waterloo, New York be officially recognized as the official birthplace of Memorial Day, a hundred years prior. Now, it didn’t change the country. It wasn’t a sweeping bit of “BREAKING NEWS!!” that made Americans stop what they were doing when they heard — if they heard it.
But it was a tip of the cap. It was something, a gesture of respect and appreciation for what Memorial Day truly is all about.
