“I am 91 and I fought for freedom and now I just want some freedom and independence before I die.”

You’d think a small Ohio town would give Harold Mullet a break.

After all, he fought in both World War II and Korea, he’s 91, and he’s been living in the damn place nearly all his life (when he wasn’t overseas fighting). Plus, he’s just trying to get his necessities: food and his prescriptions.

But nope. Village officials in Millersburg gave the vet a ticket the last time he tried to use his little utility vehicle to get to and fro.

“Well I got it fixed so I don’t have to use my legs.”

Mullet also has a truck, but explains to FOX 8 in Cleveland that he feels safer driving the smaller go-cart type thing to take care of his vital errands.

And it’s not like it’s some Formula One speed racer (but it does have heating and air conditioning). It has a top speed of only 25 mph.

More from FOX 8:

Holmes sheriff officials say he can drive the vehicle on county roads.

But, Mullet needs to go on village roads to get to the store.

“He got a ticket and it cost him over $100,” said Christine Kaufman, a family friend.

The Village of Millersburg, however, has an ordinance prohibiting all purpose vehicles, like Mullet’s, from operating on village streets. The mayor tells us the law is designed to keep everyone safe.

Mullet and his friends would like the law changed.

Harold Mullet says he just wants to be able to take care of himself.

Think he’s earned at least that much.
