Another example of ungrateful Americans dishonoring veterans who made the ultimate sacrifice — or necessary censorship?
You be the judge.
A veterans committee is in a tug-of-war with a Michigan city council over a proposed memorial statue (above photo depicts a semblance) — otherwise known as a “battle cross” — the likeness of which is intended to remember fallen soldiers.
The crux of the dispute has to do with the fact that it features a military firearm (M-16) along with a helmet and a pair of boots. The Milford Village Council, according to the Army Times, doesn’t think it would serve as “an appropriate focal point” for Milford’s Central Park, which would be its home.
The proposed plan would be an eight-foot-tall monument with a large granite base topped by the aforementioned 52-inch effigy, which falls in line with a tradition dating back to the Civil War.
“There was some concern from a couple of members regarding the specific memorial that’s proposed,” said Village Council Manager Christian Wuerth. “Specifically, the gun. They understood the history of (the memorial) and the meaning of it, they just didn’t feel it was appropriate for that specific location.”
Other members opposed the plan for other reasons.
“I don’t think it needs to be a center point of our Central Park,” Council President Jerry Aubry said. “The boots, the machine gun, the helmet; I understand it should be there somewhere, but I don’t think it should be right in the middle of the park.”
The is scheduled to brought up again to the council on April 20. Bear Hall, founder and chairman of the local Friends of American Veterans (FAV), plans to attend the meeting with “a lot of people”.
