After a three-part report published by CBS News raised uncomfortable questions concerning the Wounded Warrior Project (WWP), the veteran-focused nonprofit will undergo a financial review in order to address recent criticism of its spending habits.

At first, WWP demanded that CBS News retract its report and apologize for its accusations.

“We are outraged to see that CBS chose to run the story despite our ongoing efforts to set the record straight,” WWP said in an open letter posted on Facebook. “We can only deduce that CBS willfully set aside the information WWP provided in favor of the false statements made by a handful of former, disgruntled employees.”

The open letter denied the media outlet’s allegations that WWP spent donation money on lavish parties and employee retreats. It also disagreed with statements made by Army Staff Sgt. Erick Millette, a former employee of WWP.

“We demand that CBS immediately correct the record, issue a retraction of the false statements, and issue an apology to the public and the tens of thousands of wounded veterans and their families who have been offended by these false statements. We expect your prompt attention to this urgent matter,” WWP wrote.

Since CBS hasn’t agreed to retract or alter its articles, WWP is willfully inviting a financial review in order to set the record straight.

For more than a decade, the Wounded Warrior Project (“WWP”) has operated with the sole purpose of honoring and empowering the courageous men and women who have been injured in service of our country. As a Board, we volunteer our time in support of this mission because we profoundly believe in its lasting, positive impact on the 83,000 wounded warriors and over 15,000 family members that the organization serves. We want to thank the Wounded Warrior Project’s donors, sponsors, employees and partners whose extraordinary generosity makes this possible.

The Board takes very seriously the concerns that have been raised in recent days and is in the process of retaining independent advisors to conduct a thorough financial and policy review of the concerns. We remain steadfast in our commitment to our warriors and supporters and will ensure that the organization is effectively fulfilling this important mission.
