Only William Shatner, the man who made Captain Kirk and Star Trek a science fiction icon, could pull off driving one of these.

To raise awareness for American Legion, the wartime veteran organization that aids military families, Shatner will drive the Rivet (pictured above) across Route 66. As he drives this outlandish space bike, Shatner will simultaneously interview veterans driving alongside him for a documentary and raise a scholarship fund for the children of fallen soldiers.

The Rivet is a custom-built, three-wheeled chrome monster that will carry the 84 year-old actor and his wife, Elizabeth Shatner, across 2,400 miles. Living on the road is never easy, but it’s worth it when it’s for a good cause.

“If it helps get Americans on board to honor our military families, their sacrifices and our troops, then it’s worth every bit of energy and bugs on the face,” said Elizabeth Shatner.

Shatner and his entourage embarked on their cross-country journey on June 23 from Aurora, IL, and they will ride for eight days until they reach Los Angeles. The entire experience will be livestreamed here.
