The White House has officially rejected the Department of Defense’s proposal to close the federal prison in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba due to its high expense. The ballpark cost of moving prisoners from one place to another?

According to the Wall Street Journal, it currently costs $400 million to run Gitmo every year. Closing the prison would require $600 million, including $350 million to build a new prison on U.S. soil. After the one-time expenses related to construction, the DoD estimated that a new prison would cost only $300 million annually.

Though the government already pays millions on Gitmo’s upkeep, paying even more to close the facility and build a new one is a tall order. Fearing the enormous budget, the Obama Administration asked the DoD to make revisions to its proposal so it may pass the plan in the future.

One of the first executive orders Obama signed when he took office in 2009 declared that Guantanamo Bay would be closed as soon as possible. Unfortunately, it’s likely that this $600 million roadblock will prevent the president from seeing his executive order through before he leaves office in 2017.
