Filmmaker Oliver Stone, who served in Vietnam with the 25th Infantry Division and First Calvary Division from September 1967 to November 1968, has commenced production on a new biopic about the former National Security Agency contractor who leaked thousands of classified documents to the media.

Its most-appropriate title? Snowden.

According to the director of Platoon and Wall Street, Edward Snowden is an “ordinary man who unquestioningly served his country”.

Starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt as the title character and Shailene Woodley as his girlfriend, Lindsey Mills, the film will also feature Zachary Quinto as journalist Glenn Greenwald and even Nicolas Cage as a U.S. Intelligence officer.

In the above photo – released by Stone and the film’s publicists – Gordon-Levitt is seen portraying Snowden during his time in the Army Reserve. The leaker was discharged after serving five months in 2004. He allegedly injured himself as part of parachute training.

Snowden is slated to be released this Christmas.
