On Monday, Tech Sgt. Timothy A. Officer Jr. and Tech Sgt. Marty B. Bettelyoun died in a tragic freefall accident during parachute training in Florida. The Air Force Special Operations Command is investigating how the accident occurred, but it won’t release any concrete details regarding Officer and Bettelyoun’s deaths until after its investigation has concluded.

“Tech Sergeants Timothy Officer and Marty Bettelyoun were the epitome of a Special Tactics Airman: professional, dedicated and prepared to give their lives in service to their country,” Col. Wolfe Davidson said in a statement released Tuesday. “Our community has taken a huge loss with their deaths, and they will be sorely missed.”

The investigation of the freefall accident could take up to a year.

The two airmen were both members of the 24th Special Operations Wing, which features pararescuemen specialized in search and rescue operations. The 24th SOW was reactivated in 2012 and is headquartered in Hurlburt Field, Florida.

Officer served in the Air Force for 14 years, and amid his deployments in Afghanistan and Iraq Officer was awarded the Bronze Star twice. Bettelyoun served in the Air Force for 15 years and dedicated himself to teaching military recruits survival, evasion and escape skills.
