A mall vendor at Fort Carson pulled a t-shirt from its shelves after customers complained about its message.

The shirt in question depicts the Statue of Liberty swathed in a burqa, a garment worn by Muslim women, and holding a torch framed in a star and crescent, a symbol associated with Islam. Beside the cloaked Statue, the shirt is emblazoned with the warning, “Don’ t let this happen to America.”

The shirt was brought to the attention of the Military Religious Freedom Foundation by several customers, and MRFF President Mikey Weinstein swiftly penned a press release demanding for its removal on Nov. 3.

On behalf of its almost 43,000 armed forces active duty and veteran clients, which includes approximately 13.5% of all Muslim-Americans serving in the United States military, and its 224 clients stationed at Fort Carson, the Military Religious Freedom Foundation (MRFF) expresses unmitigated outrage that the Army leadership at Fort Carson permitted the selling of that virulently Islamophobic and disgusting T-Shirt at its official Post Exchange store.

The juxtaposition of that shocking image and text message on that T-Shirt epitomizes the wretched plight of prejudice and bigotry which innocent Muslim-Americans all too often suffer while so honorably serving in today’s service branches.

In under a day, the shirt was removed from the store.

Merica Apparel, the vendor that sold the shirt, apologized and pledged to learn from the experience in an official statement.

“As soon as it was brought to our attention that a member of the Fort Carson Military Community had an issue with the shirt, it was pulled from our shelves,” Merica Apparel said. “We did not mean to offend anybody with our t-shirts. We would like to apologize to anyone that may have been offended, along with AAFES for bringing discredit [to] their organization as well. We realize that being a Military Community, there are people from all over the world with different cultural backgrounds living and working on Fort Carson.”

Weinstein has championed several causes for the MRFF in recent months, ranging from removing a sign that says ‘God Bless the Military’ from a Hawaii base to reprimanding a secretary who forwarded emails about a Christian charity to Air Force personnel.
