In ISIS territory, women are forbidden to wear bright colors or intricate patterns. Donning black, plain clothing from head to toe is vital for ensuring a woman’s safety under Sharia law.

Captured by photojournalist Jack Shahine just west of Tal Abyad, these vibrant portraits show Syrian women tearing off a symbol of ISIS oppression and revealing brilliant clothing underneath. They must have been wearing two layers in the unforgiving desert in order to celebrate this moment. Rock on, ladies!

Shahine told Mashable that thousands of refugees have fled the area since ISIS took control last year. Here’s to hoping that they find safer pastures and better clothing outside of ISIS influence.
