If you’re a public Native American leader who’s extremely outspoken about race and expanding civil rights for people of all colors, it’s probably not a good idea to wear blackface and dress up as Bob Marley for Halloween.

But, alas, that’s exactly what the chairman for the San Carlos Apache Tribe did (as you can see in the photograph below).

His name is Terry Rambler, and he’s since apologized for the poor taste in wardrobe Thursday, after posting pictures of his reggae wrongdoing to Facebook shortly after the holiday (he’s since removed them).

More from 12News:

Rambler posted an apology to anyone he may have offended, saying he only did it as part of the costume, which he said he modeled after his favorite musician.

“In hindsight, it was a poor choice I made,” Rambler wrote. “I am not a racist and I did not mean to offend anyone but I realize I did.”

But critics were swift to pounce on Rambler, who was an outspoken critic of the Washington Redskins football team’s name.

“Wow, really?” civil rights leader Jarrett Maupin said. “There’s no way he didn’t know what he was doing was offensive.”
