An Afghan soldier turned on U.S. troops and opened fire in Jalalabad, Afghanistan Wednesday, wounding two and killing one U.S. soldier before being shot dead himself — according to an official and an eyewitness.

The American soldier killed in action has yet to be identified.

According to Afghan General Fazel Ahmad Sherzad, the gunfire erupted after a meeting between Afghan provincial leaders and a U.S. Embassy official in the provincial governor of the city’s compound.

“Right after the U.S. official had left, suddenly an Afghan army soldier opened fire on the U.S. soldiers who were present in the compound,” Sherzad told The Associated Press.

Sherzad identified the rogue Afghan soldier killed to be Abdul Azim, from Laghman province. His motive is not yet known.
