In his annual Labor Day address in Boston, President Obama unveiled a new executive order to guarantee seven days of sick leave per year to the employees of federal contractor. If the order is implemented, this will guarantee a full week of sick leave to 300,000 Americans.

Under the executive order, contractor employees would earn one hour of sick leave for every 30 hours worked. In his speech, Obama told the crowd that Congress must follow his lead and provide private sector workers paid sick leave.

“Right now, about 40% of private-sector workers — 44 million people in America — don’t have access to paid sick leave,” Obama said. “Unfortunately, only Congress has the power to give this security to all Americans. But where I can act, I will.”

In addition to announcing his newest executive order, Obama used the speech as an opportunity to criticize GOP presidential candidates. In particular, Obama bashed Scott Walker’s dismantling of teachers unions in Wisconsin and Walker’s own comparison between peaceful protestors and Islamic State militants.

“He is bragging about how he destroyed collective bargaining rights in his state,” Obama said at the address. “And he says that busting unions prepares him to fight ISIL…. Really?”

To drive his point about the importance of unions home, Obama made reference to Tom Brady of the Boston Patriots, whose four-game suspension was recently overturned in federal court.

“Even Brady’s happy he’s got a union,” Obama said. “They had his back. You know if Brady needs a union, we definitely need unions.”
