While the Polish company isn’t the first to attempt producing such a product — the U.S., Great Britain and even Iran have all tried — they are the first in making one that’s light enough to satisfy military standards.

It works by using shear-thickening fluids which harden on impact and disperse and absorb ballistic energy (i.e. bullets) through its “non-Newtonian” makeup.

“Non-Newtonian” means that the liquid flows in a different way than a Newtonian fluid, like water. Examples of a non-Newtonian fluid include butter, caramel topping, ketchup, Silly Putty and even Flubber.
