To take in the following photograph that depicts young children playing in the foreground, with the haunting remnants of one of the fiercest battles in human history in the background, is fertile, visual turf for cognitive bias.

Because on one hand, you can peer at the picture and be reminded of all those brave lives loss in the fight for freedom, those who gave everything to rid the world of fascism and tyranny. And that’s incredibly somber and sad.

Or, on the other hand, you can look at the photo and be reminded that those who died to ensure that we remain free won, and that the image fortifies this notion and their selfless, noble victory.

You can look at the children playing and know that this innocent act alone — building sandcastles on a beach — wouldn’t have occurred if the other side defeated American and its allies.
