According to an audio statement released Saturday, the Nigerian “militant group” Boko Haram has pledged allegiance to the terror mongers based out of Syria and Iraq, ISIS.

The announcement was made through Boko Haram’s Twitter account, and while it isn’t yet verified, it’s believed by many sources to be the group’s leader, Abubakar Shekau.

Previously thought to have links with al-Qaeda, the militants have been in the midst of a terror campaign aimed to impose Islamic rule in northern Nigeria since 2009. While not the first group to jump on the ISIS bandwagon, they’re arguably the most noteworthy.

According to the BBC, ISIS or the “Islamic State” is trying to establish a “caliphate”, a state ruled by a single political and religious leader according to Islamic law, or Sharia. Its leader, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, is known to his followers as Caliph Ibrahim.
