One couple is now vacationing in federal prison after their honeymoon trip to the Islamic State was busted by federal agents.

Mississippi State University students and newlyweds Jaelyn Delshaun Young, 20, and Muhammad Oda Dakhlalla, 22, were apprehended at Golden Triangle Regional Airport in Columbus, Mississippi over the weekend and charged with attempting to provide material support to terrorists. The couple has already been jailed and denied bail.

The newlyweds had married in June and told their families they would fly to Istanbul for their honeymoon, but their plan was to land in Turkey and take a bus or car to Syria. Their ultimate goal was to join an ISIS cell.

Dakhlalla is the son of a local imam, and Young is the daughter of a military veteran who served in Iraq and Afghanistan and later became a police officer. Both families were “absolutely shocked” to find out about the couple’s plan. Before leaving, the couple left handwritten notes to their families stating that they would never return.

Undercover federal agents posed as ISIS operatives and corresponded with the couple over Facebook for several months. During this time, the couple expressed enthusiasm for joining the Islamic State and admitted that the honeymoon was their explanation for leaving the country. They asked questions about ISIS basic training and described their skills to see how they could best contribute to the cause.

Despite being the daughter of a military veteran, Young praised the gunmen behind the murders of five servicemen in the July 16 Chattanooga shooting. “What makes me feel better after just watching the news, a akhi [that is Arabic for brother] carried out an attack against U.S. Marines in Tennessee. The number of supporters are growing,” Young said.

Dakhlalla and Young could receive up to 21 years in prison each for conspiring to aid a terrorist group.
