The military identified the Navy SEAL who was killed by ‘direct fire’ in northern Iraq as Special Warfare Operator 1st Class Charles Humphrey Keating IV.

Keating, 31, was killed after ISIS militants pushed through Kurdish lines in Peshmerga. In a “coordinated and complex” attack, about 100 ISIS fighters stormed Kurdish forces with bulldozers, car bombs and suicide vests. After breaking the lines, militants charged two miles to the camps where American advisors set up shop. Keating and his fellow SEALs responded to rescue those Americans.

Before joining the military, Keating was an all-state long distance runner at Arcadia High School in Phoenix, Ariz. At one point, the teenage star athlete appeared on the Discover Channel’s Outward Bound television series.

Keating went to Indiana University for track, only to leave in order to pursue Navy SEAL training. He was to be married in November.

As a congressional representative of Keating’s home state, Sen. John McCain issued the following statement:

I send my deepest prayers and condolences to the family and loved ones of Charlie Keating who was tragically killed in action fighting ISIL in Iraq. Like so many brave Americans who came before him, Charlie sacrificed his life in honorable service to our nation for a cause greater than self-interest, which we can never truly repay.
