A Gulf War military veteran and “the first and only certified cannabis nurse in Iowa” confronted presidential candidate Carly Fiorina in front of 600 people last week about her stance on medical marijuana.

At a voter’s forum in Iowa, Shelly Van Winkle asked Fiorina how she would make it easier for military veterans to obtain medical marijuana to treat their post-traumatic stress disorder. Fiorina is outspokenly against the distribution of marijuana, which she says contributed to the death of her daughter.

During the GOP primary debate hosted on CNN, Fiorina said, “We are misleading young people when we tell them that marijuana is just like having beer. It’s not.”

She reiterated her position in her response to Van Winkle, and said that medical marijuana could not be used in tandem with chemotherapy. When Van Winkle told Fiorina that she was spreading misinformation, Fiorina explained that she lost her daughter to addiction and thus couldn’t support legalizing marijuana for any purpose.

Van Winkle, a cannabis nurse who specializes in treating veterans with PTSD, was disappointed in the candidate’s answer because she wasn’t talking about recreational drugs. Marijuana is becoming a popular alternative treatment for veterans suffering from PTSD, and two states currently allow VA hospitals to distribute it. Citing the high suicide rate among veterans, Van Winkle said that “Cannabis helps people.”

“I’m asking [Fiorina] to step up and make this an election issue,” Van Winkle said. ”She fell back to rhetoric, but when it comes to medicine, it shouldn’t be about politics. It should be about science.”
