Heroes from all walks of life rose to the occasion when two airplanes collided with the World Trade Center 14 years ago. While we’ll never be able to take stock of each and every American who lost their lives in this terrorist attack, we can do our best to remember the heroes who put themselves in harms way to save others.

One of those heroes was Rick Rescorla, a U.S. Army veteran of British origin. In his military career, Rescorla served as a platoon leader in Vietnam and participated in the Battle of Ia Drang. Though he was nicknamed “Hard Core” by his comrades for his bravery and leadership, Rescorla was best known for singing to his troops to calm them down in intense situations.

This habit of singing when the world was falling to pieces would help Rescorla save thousands of lives on Sept. 11, 2001. After retiring from the military, Rescorla became the director of security at Morgan Stanley in World Trade Center Tower 1. When a hijacked plane hit the building, Rescorla ignored security and began to coordinate a mass evacuation of the Morgan Stanley offices with only a walkie talkie, his cell phone and a blowhorn.

To help guide his coworkers to safety, Rescorla sang an old Welsh song about his birthplace in Cornwall.

Men of Cornwall stop your dreaming, Can’t you see their spearpoints gleaming?,
See their warriors’ pennants streaming, To this battlefield.
Men of Cornwall stand ye steady, It cannot be ever said ye for the battle were not ready
Stand and never yield!”

Rescorla singlehandedly saved Morgan Stanley’s 2,000+ employees. Unfortunately, he refused to the leave the tower until he was certain everyone was out. His remains were never found, and Rescorla was declared dead after three weeks.

This ten minute video shares video footage and witness testimony of Rescorla’s last and finest hour.
