In the eleventh shark attack in three weeks, an unidentified Camp Lejeune Marine was bitten offshore on July 4. He was taken to a hospital and released by the next morning. Officials reported that he suffered lacerations to his hand and forearm, but is otherwise unharmed.

Shark Week has only just begun, but the shark attacks have been occurring at an alarming rate all season. North Carolina has experienced the most shark attacks off its coast in 80 years. Victims have ranged from an 8 year-old child to a a 68 year-old man, and at least two have had their limbs amputated.

Officials have yet to pinpoint why sharks have been so feisty. Current theories include that the unseasonably hot weather is driving sharks to shore and that an increased sea turtle population is attracting sharks hunting for prey.
