The longtime mistress and wife of one of the worst (if not the worst) human beings to ever live — Eva Braun, lover to Adolf Hitler, the mass murdering dictator of Nazi Germany — wore underwear.

Like most people.

Unlike most people, one of her pairs happens to now rest on display in a little town of 1,404 people in northern Ohio named Elmore — on sale for a whopping $7,500. They were hers and she wore them.

Or so the owner of the store that’s selling them says. That would be Ernie Scarango, proprietor of a “masculine-themed” collectible store called “Mantiques”.

There are many, many critics however. And the full tale of how this bizarre piece of Third Reich lingerie ended up in some remote area of the American Midwest is indeed nothing short of a whopper — which is precisely how it’s introduced by The Daily Beast in their in-depth investigation regarding the bit of cloth monogrammed “EB”:

The path that brought Braun’s alleged underthings to the display case is even stranger than one might imagine. The tale starts on Hitler’s mountaintop lair in the days after Nazi Germany crumbled to the Allies, and involves a mysterious American soldier, a controversial auctioneer, and a whiskey-distilling, panty-selling antique dealer in the tiny hamlet of Elmore. No one has yet made an offer on the underwear, and few seem to be buying the story behind it, either.

That “mysterious” American soldier is D.C. Watts (or Watt?), a first lieutenant in the 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment. The thing is though, there is no record of of a “D.C. Watt” in the official list (that’s not necessarily “complete” by any means) that can be seen here.

There was a Dennis Carlton Watts enlisted during that time, but he doesn’t match with the details that surround the story, and no one has been able to get in contact with his next of kin.

The enigma is rich and deep, with a lot of “ins and outs” and “whathaveyous”, but remember: we are talking about a pair of underwear here so, you know.
