More than ten years after the death of her husband, former First Lady Nancy Reagan died of congestive heart failure on March 6 at age 94. The nation is now mourning her passing and reflecting on her vast legacy.

Part of that legacy was immortalized on the silver screen. Before he was president and she was first lady, Ronald and Nancy Reagan were actors trying to make it big in show business. As the president of the Screen Actors Guild (SAG), Reagan met his future wife Nancy Davis at a SAG meeting. They hit it off immediately and married three years later.

The political power couple only appeared in one film together–a military flick titled ‘Hellcats of the Navy.’

Based on a novel written by a vice admiral, ‘Hellcats’ takes place on a submarine during World War II. Reagan played Commander Casey Abbott, the military hero who is trying to simultaneously stop the Japanese and win the affections of his sweetheart back home. Said sweetheart, Nurse Helen Blair, was played by none other than Nancy Reagan.

Casey Abbott: How do you know so much about the moon?

Helen Blair: I spent a lot of time looking at it while you were away.

Decades later, the scenes and campy dialogue the Reagans share is a touching preview of what was to come. Throughout their lengthy marriage, the Reagans “never stopped courting.” Acclaimed actor Charlton Heston called their relationship “the greatest love affair in the history of the American presidency.”

‘Hellcats of the Navy’ will never be known as a critically acclaimed or culturally significant film, but it does let us see the Reagans together in their bright-eyed and bushy-tailed primes long before they changed American politics.

RIP Nancy Reagan (1921-2016).
