The infamous hack of the Office of Personnel Management will affect an estimated 4 million Americans, namely current and former federal employees. After wringing their hands for more than a week, victims of the breach began to receive their first notifications from the OPM last weekend.

These notifications are only sent to those whose data was compromised during the hack. Contrary to earlier rumors, military records were unaffected by the breach.

Notification emails sent by another company allegedly writing on the OPM’s behalf are not to be trusted.

This enormous oversight in cybersecurity occurred because the OPM failed to update its computer systems. The government have fingered the Chinese as the perpetrators of the hack, which the Chinese government has vehemently denied.
