According to Defense Minister Ursula von der Leyen, the Heckler & Koch-manufactured assault rifle put through the ringer (almost literally) in the clip above is being abandoned by the German military — and right away. The country’s special forces are scheduled to receive new weapons immediately.

The minister said Wednesday, quite tersely, that the gun “had no future in the Germany army in its current state of construction.” This statement of course leaves room for the possibility that the gun will simply be replaced by a newer version of the classic H&K weapon, but nothing is in stone as of yet.

Apparently, the country’s leaders weren’t pleased with the performance of the gun lately (despite its brilliant performance in the aforementioned video). More on the problems from the German media outlet Deutsche Welle:

The assault rifle’s capabilities came under scrutiny after a study commissioned by the German Defense Ministry last year claimed “the weapons system did not fulfill the requirements.”

The weapon’s capacity to hit targets fell to 30 percent when the surrounding temperature reached 30 degrees Celsius (86 Fahrenheit) or when the weapon became hot through constant use, the report said.

The reason for the gun’s poor precision was its “complete system,” the research revealed.
