Cindy Martinez, a Marine veteran and mother of two children, had both of her feet and her right hand amputated Thursday to halt the advance of flesh-eating bacteria.
On May 25, Martinez was rushed to the hospital due to shoulder pain. Doctors quickly determined that Martinez was suffering from Necrotizing Fasciitis, or flesh-eating bacteria. Since entering the hospital, Martinez has had multiple life-saving surgeries in to stop the bacteria’s progression through her body.
Martinez met her husband David while both were in the Marine Corps at Parris Island, S.C. They have been married for 13 years, and had a 5 year-old son and 2 year-old daughter together. Friends and family are currently raising money via a GoFundMe campaign for Martinez’s medical bills.
