The ex-snipers caught by the U.S. Government in a Drug Enforcement Administration sting operation are currently being sentenced for joining a fake murder-for-hire business and planning to use their deadly military skills to commit civilian crimes.

The federal government set up a sting operation to find and expose ex-snipers in a staged freelance murder operation for a fake drug cartel. It arrested five individuals in 2013, including three military veterans, for trying to participate in the business. In one conversation recorded by federal investigators, the accused discussed charging $700,000 to kill a federal agent leaking information to the DEA on behalf of the drug organization.

Former US solider Timothy Vamvakias, one of the veteran caught in this murder ring, was sentenced to 20 years imprisonment in July. Dennis Gogel, a former sniper who left the German military in 2010, was just sentenced this week to 22 years in prison for his crimes. He expressed his remorse before his sentencing.

“How stupid I feel to have engaged in something like that,” Gogel said. “I truly am sorry.”

The group’s ringleader and American veteran Joseph Hunter is awaiting sentencing next month. Hunter, who used the alias ‘Rambo’ in his dirty dealings, pleaded guilty to all charges and will get at minimum 10 years in prison and at maximum a lifetime sentence.
