A whackjob who dirtied the name of the Green Berets and the U.S. military may soon get what’s coming to him.
Frazier Glenn Miller, a Vietnam vet who shot three outside a Kansas Jewish community center in April 2014, was convicted of capital murder after a bizarre 11-day trial. It took the jury less than two hours to reach their verdict and recommend the death penalty.
Miller served in the U.S. Army for 20 years, including 13 years as a Green Beret. He was discharged in 1979 for distributing racist propaganda and got into further trouble with the military after his former unit testified that he took arms from Fort Bragg and convinced other active-duty troops to teach white supremacists how to use the weapons. Once the military had washed its hands of Miller, he continued preaching white nationalism and spreading various anti-Jewish conspiracy theories.
Last year, Miller became infamous when he gunned down three people outside a Jewish community center, including a 14 year-old child. Between his arrest and his conviction on Aug. 31, 2015, Miller repeatedly admitted to the crime and expressed no regret–even when he served as his own lawyer and defended himself in court. In fact, Miller took to an easel to write “IT’S THE JEWS STUPID” during his closing argument.
Before the jury left the court to make its decision, Miller reportedly stood up and said, “Frankly my dears, I don’t give a damn”–an iconic line from ‘Gone with the Wind’–before raising his arm in a Nazi salute.
Though the jury recommended the death penalty via lethal injection, there are several reasons why the judge may grant Miller a life sentence instead, such as his poor health, age and (cringe) military service.
