This is the United States Navy’s Nimitz-class aircraft carrier — the USS Theodore Roosevelt — passing through the Suez Canal earlier this month.

As you can see, it’s a time-lapse video, which means it shows a lot in a little amount of time.

Being “Nimitz-class” is quite a distinction. It’s a grade named after World War II Pacific Fleet commander Fleet Admiral Chester W. Nimitz (who was also the Navy’s last “fleet admiral”) given to just ten aircraft carriers in the entire branch, all nuclear-powered and enormous. Generally, they’re 1,092 feet long with a full load displacement of over 100,000 long tons.

For years, they’ve been the biggest carriers in the Navy, but are slowly being replaced by the Gerald R. Ford-class which feature the Electromagnetic Aircraft Launch System.
