Two American contractors were murdered and two other Americans were wounded during a shooting incident at a police training center in Jordan.

More from ABC News:

A U.S. official said the shooter took his own life after the shootings though the Jordanian Information Bureau said the man had been “killed at the scene by Jordanian police forces.”

The shootings took place at the Jordan International Police Training Center just outside of Amman. The facility is manned by a mix of international security trainers who provide training to Jordanian security forces. The trainers are contract employees.

In a statement, the U.S. Embassy in Jordan confirmed that “two U.S. citizen trainers were killed and two wounded in a shooting incident today” at the training facility.

“We understand that a Jordanian employee and South African trainer were also killed and that additional Jordanian and Lebanese individuals were wounded” in the attack, according to the statement. “The investigation is on-going and it is premature to speculate on motive at this point. We are working closely with the Government of Jordan and local security services on a full and comprehensive investigation.”

According to numerous sources, the shooter was a Jordanian policeman who had recently been fired at the U.S.-funded facility.

A Pentagon official confirmed that the shooting didn’t affect American military personnel in the region.

The U.S. founded the Joint International Police Training Center in 2004 as a place to train Iraqi cops.
