The Navy Yard was placed on lockdown Thursday morning after a call to the police that two gunmen were seen on the premises. The FBI has since declared the area clear and safe.

This morning, alarms were sounded and several buildings locked down to prevent potential gunmen from targeting employees who work at the former shipyard. Other buildings were evacuated as early as 7:30 a.m while helicopters and police swarmed the area.

By 9:50 a.m., the FBI declared that the threat was lifted. More details will be announced at a press conference later this morning.

The Navy Yard is the country’s oldest navy installation, and it is located only one mile away from the U.S. Capitol. It was also the site of a deadly shooting in 2013, which resulted in 12 fatalities.
