You may already be familiar with Bill Nye, the scientist and former host of ‘Bill Nye the Science Guy,’ but you probably don’t know that he is the son of a Navy veteran who served WWII in an unusual way.

During WWII, Jacqueline Jenkins-Nye was recruited for the Allied code breaker team, which used German Enigma machines to decipher encrypted messages. Their ability to crack multi-layered codes allowed the Allies to end the war two years early.

Since her work was classified, Jenkins-Nye’s contribution to the war was kept secret. This revelation came to light during a clip of an upcoming documentary starring Nye.anigif_enhanced-22353-1438011793-2
