What happens when a photographer — and Navy veteran — who loves snapping heartwarming shots of parents and their newborns posts a baby being held by a sailor in a swaddling American flag on Facebook?

She gets her photo featured on a photo-shaming Facebook page, gets crap for it, gets praise for it, then eventually makes an appearance a few hours later on CNN.

Yep, that’s the picture above. The second link will take you to a social media page where the anonymous creator of “You Call Yourself a Photographer” aggressively attempts to take down a woman’s artistic — not to mention “American” — tact and overall “oeuvre”.

Positive or negative, the picture has proved to be polarizing social media fodder for thousands today, and with two clear sides.

One side says it’s a straightforward, unforgivable violation of the U.S. Flag Code, which states that the flag should never be used as “apparel, bedding or drapery. It should never be festooned, drawn back, nor up, in folds, but always allowed to fall free.”

It also states that it should never be “used as a receptacle for receiving, holding, carrying, or delivering anything.”

The other side has positive, with many commenting on Facebook that it’s a beautiful photograph and one that “clearly the military member loves his country and baby.”
