The Military Religious Freedom Foundation (MRFF), an atheist nonprofit that represents 42,645 active-duty, reserve and Guard members, is making waves in Hawaii for petitioning to remove religiously-biased language from a sign.
MRFF president Mikey Weinstein wrote a letter to the commanding officer of Marine Corps Base Hawaii to complain about a sign with one simple message:
“God bless the military, their families and the civilians who work with them.”
“This sign is a brazen violation of the No Establishment clause of the Constitution, as it sends the clear message that your installation gives preference to those who hold religious beliefs over those who do not, and those who prefer a monotheistic, intervening god over other deities or theologies,” Weinstein wrote.
He also said that the sign was brought to the MRFF’s attention by 23 active-duty Marines, including 21 Protestants. The membership of MRFF is 96 percent Catholic and Protestant.
The offending sign was erected near the base marina in the aftermath of 9/11 to honor the military community. MRFF is requesting that the sign be moved to the base chapel.
Weinstein also wrote in his letter that the MRFF would drop the issue if the military changed the sign to say, “There is no God to bless our military, their families, and the civilians who work with them” or add references to “Allah, Satan or the flying spaghetti monster.”
