Army veteran Omar Gonzalez was sentenced Tuesday for 17 months in prison after his notorious infiltration of the White House.

Gonzalez was arrested last September after he scaled the White House fence, sprinted across the lawn and stormed the mansion, all while armed with a VG-10 black folding knife. He was not apprehended by the Secret Service until the East Room.

Simply put, Americans everywhere suffered from acute secondhand embarrassment after word of the Secret Service’s ineptitude got out.

Once arrested, authorities also discovered hundreds of rounds of ammunition, knives, several tomahawks and a machete inside Gonzalez’s car, which was parked nearby.

Gonzalez served in the Army from 1997 to 2003 and from 2005 to 2012. Upon return, he was diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder. Due to his military service and mental illness, Gonzalez will likely be released by Christmas “with credit for good behavior.”
