According to Army Chief of Staff General Ray Odierno Wednesday, a revised tattoo policy is coming soon that will remove the limit on the number and size of United States Army soldiers’ body ink.

Neck tattoos or tattoos that are racist, sexist or extremist will still be prohibited, however, as announced at the AUSA conference.

Odierno said that he and other Army leaders have listened intently to soldiers, and the overwhelming consensus is that they want fewer restrictions regarding tattoos. Others also mentioned the fear that it could stop them from advancing their career.

“Society is changing its view of tattoos and we have to change along with that,” Odierno said. “It makes sense. Soldiers have grown up in an era when tattoos are much more acceptable and we have to change along with that.”

According to an Army spokesperson, the regulation will be updated “in the very near future”.
