The Army took a vast step to integrate women into its ranks by opening 19,700 artillery jobs to qualified women.
Specifically, position offers in the 13B (cannon crewmember) and 13D (field artillery automated tactical data system specialist) military occupational specialties (MOS) are available to both men and woman. The decision was announced in an Army directive on Wednesday.
The only MOS that will remain exclusive to male soldiers is 13F, or fire support specialist, because those soldiers are integrated into infantry and armor units.
The entire U.S. military is gradually working towards integrating its armed forces. Defense Secretary Ash Carter has been an especially vocal supporter of opening combat jobs to women.
“You have to recruit from the American population. Half the American population is female,” Carter said last month. “So it’d be crazy not to be, so to speak, fishing in that pond for qualified service members.”
