In a cringe-worthy video released by Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) on August 4, jihadists praise the actions of the Chattanooga gunman and call for more lone wolf attacks.

The ten-minute video was published by the AQAP-backed al-Malahem Media Foundation and starred Abu al-Miqdad al-Kindi, a jihadist who was released from a Yemeni prison in April 2015. The video, which simply featured a talking ahead against a dark background, took credit for a slew of violent attacks across the nation, most notably Mohammad Youssef Abdulazeez’s assault of a military recruitment center in Chattanooga, Tenn.

“And the latest operation of Muhammad Abdulazeez, which occurred in the heart of American soil, is clear evidence of [successful homegrown terrorism],” al-Kindi said. “He penetrated the base killing and injuring American Marines in a blessed jihadi operation… if a Western government was unable to protect its soldiers in its own soil, will it really be able to protect its citizens, who insult Islam and ridicule the prophets?”

Abdulazeez‘s ties to terrorist organizations is a point of controversy. While his blog contained Islamist rhetoric, the FBI have yet to confirm whether Abdulazeez was in contact with any foreign terrorist organization. If there is no firm evidence that Abdulazeez conspired with terrorists, the four Marines and sailor he killed will be ineligible for Purple Hearts, barring the intervention of a Congressional bill.
