A United States Marine helicopter providing assistance in the wake of the Nepal earthquake is now missing, according to officials.

A U.S. Navy Captain — Chris Sims — says the Huey helicopter was in the midst of relief operations near Charikot, Nepal on Tuesday when it lost contact.

U.S. officials have yet to disclose how many people were on the aircraft, which is part of Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadron 49.

Hueys can hold anywhere from 6 to 15 passengers, depending on seating capacity and the task.

The incident is “under investigation”.
