Sixteen years ago, today’s slap-happy holiday was established by a comedy writer toting a fake origin story (they needed an inventor of the high five! and realized they had nothing).

The one they went with (there’s a laundry list of unsubstantiated origin stories) is based on a former college basketball player named Lamont Sleets, who claimed he learned the move from his Vietnam vet father and his buddies.

The Department of Defense got into the action a year ago and fired out the following video. It features a bunch of active-duty military personnel (although it fails to include members of the United States Coast Guard).
