The hammer and sickle took a big hit when the Soviet Union toppled and the Cold War ended. Especially the sickle, since who really needs one these days? A lot of what it does has been automated. The hammer, however, is still somewhat relevant, despite the prevalence of air-powered nail guns and the like.
Anyway, you know what else took a big hit right after (or thereabouts) Ronald Reagan exclaimed “Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!”? The Russian navy. Which was also the former Soviet Union’s navy. Either way, it shrunk to an embarrassing size, and it hasn’t even approached its heyday proportions since.
An infographic exists that puts this fact on full display. The contrast is pretty striking.
