Like the constitutional right to bear arms, Civil War reenactments are a storied tradition in the American south. However, a reenactment of the Battle of Honey Springs in Checotah, Oklahoma went awry when one drunk individual attempted to mix the two.
The weekend-long Civil War reenactment in Checotah is a celebration of military history, victory and sacrifice. The entire event included Civil War-era military drills, staged artillery fire and guided tours through replica military camps. To acknowledge Veterans Day, organizers planned to end the weekend with a ceremony that honored the military veterans of all wars.
The entire weekend was nearly thrown off course by a belligerent local with a sawed off shotgun, the same firearm used by Confederate cavalrymen during the Civil War. Gary Alen Lane stumbled onto a Civil War battlefield Friday and fired a gun loaded with real bullets at a tent full of reenactors. While shotgun pellets grazed the arm of one unsuspecting actor, no one was hurt in the incident. Lane was quickly apprehended by local deputies and the reenactment of the Battle of Honey Springs continued without further issue.
