It’s been promised time and time again by President Barack Obama but, according to one of his closest and most important current staffers over the weekend, POTUS will finally close the Guantanamo Baby prison in Cuba … before he leaves office.

“He feels an obligation to his successor to close that, and that’s why we’re going to do it,” said White House Chief of Staff Denis McDonough on FOX News Sunday.

Obama has previously stated that the jail is expensive to keep up and used by terrorists all over the world as bulletin board material — i.e. fodder for recruiting.

This from TIME:

McDonough said the president will present Congress with a detailed plan to close the prison, but did not completely rule out Obama using his executive authority to close the prison if his Congressional plan fails.

“The president just said he’s going to present a plan to Congress and work with Congress and then we’ll make some final determination,” McDonough said Sunday.
