This Saturday, when the nation tunes into the annual and storied Army-Navy football game — which pits both service academies, West Point and Annapolis against one another — being playing out in Baltimore, Maryland, a certain contingent of soldiers as well as World War II veterans can see their legacy being honored in the threads worn by the Black Knights themselves.
The uniforms the Army players will be wearing, with regimental patches and the American flag, are odes to the 82nd Airborne Division. During the Second World War, paratroopers led the invasion of not only Normandy, but also ones in Italy and Holland.
Even the cadets’ headgear will portray a nod to the jumpers’ heroic past: the painted design is designed to mimic “the netting worn over the paratroopers own helmets.”
The game is set to kick off at 3 p.m. EST.
Inspired by World War II 82nd paratroopers, we honor the past by re-telling stories of valor, courage & sacrifice. https://t.co/nxhNsSOUB3 pic.twitter.com/xU1q5vjghO
